The brief was short: a house that would not date. Our answer was a palette taken from the ground the house stands on — limestone grey, chalk, a warm, dusty terracotta and the green of the wet meadow in front of the windows.
Mineral paints and lime plaster were chosen because they do not fail gracefully; they simply soften. Brass hardware was left unlacquered. The oak floor was oiled, not sealed, so that every future scratch can be worked back into the surface rather than sanded away.
Twenty years from now, this room will have a record of the family in it. That is the point.
